Meet Zakaria

I’m Zakaria Sherbiny, an executive coach dedicated to helping independent school leaders excel in their roles and sustain fulfilling careers. I know the weight of leadership because I’ve lived it — as a division director and teacher in independent schools, including Beauvoir in Washington, DC, St. Andrew’s Episcopal in Mississippi, and McDonogh in Baltimore.

Those years instilled a deep love for schools and a clear sense that leaders need more than good intentions — they need a trusted partner to help them thrive. Coaching is my way of giving back to the field that shaped me.

My path has been fueled by curiosity and a commitment to growth. I am a graduate of:

  • University of Virginia (BA, Sociology)

  • Harvard University (MEd, Human Development and Psychology)

  • Columbia University’s Klingenstein Center (MEd, Private School Leadership)

I’m also:

  • A Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC)

  • An Associate Certified Coach (ACC) with the International Coaching Federation

  • Credentialed in the Leadership Circle Profile 360 assessment

I enjoy staying connected with the broader world of independent schools in a variety of ways. I have been selected as a three-time member of the NAIS Coaches’ Corner, led workshops for new administrators through SAIS and One Schoolhouse, and contributed articles to NAIS and SAIS publications. I also share my expertise as a guest lecturer and practicum mentor for the Klingenstein Center.

In my 1‑1 coaching, I work most often with heads of school and senior leaders — especially those transitioning to a new role or community. Clients describe me as genuine, thoughtful, and supportive, with a coaching style that blends trust, accountability, and actionable insight.

Working with Zakaria was transformative! He is incisive and empathetic, and he helped me get to a place of stability and confidence in my leadership role. I am more effective and enjoy my job more because of our work together.
— Katie McDougall, Division Head

While no two people are the same, many leaders come to me for support with:

  • Managing stress

  • Maintaining work‑life balance

  • Navigating difficult conversations

  • Developing executive presence

  • Prioritizing effectively and delegating well

Others seek me out because they want a confidential, nonjudgmental space for honest reflection and real growth. Whatever brings you here, my goal is straightforward: to help you lead authentically, build confidence, and find joy and sustainability in the work you love.

If you’re ready for a partner in your leadership journey, I’d be honored to work with you.
